P4P king Pacquiao rules Yahoo! Sports list

|

Manny Pacquiao has yet to step inside the boxing ring against Miguel Cotto, but this early, the reigning pound-for-pound boss earned an additional motivation when he was named by Yahoo! Sports as its top ranked fighter.

All of the fighters in the Yahoo! Sports list were not in action or do not have a scheduled fight starting next month.

Pacquiao amassed a total of 238 points from the elite 25-member voting panel composed of international boxing scribes. He received 13 of the 25 first-place votes with the second-ranked Mayweather getting the remaining number.

Mayweather, who scored a one-sided win against Juan Manuel Marquez last month, garnered 233 points with WBO junior middleweight title holder Paul Williams a distant third with 165.

Shane Mosley, who is preparing for a welterweight unification fight with Andre Berto next year, landed at fourth with 148, while former lightweight champ Marquez placed fifth with 131.

Cotto, Pacquiao’s opponent on Nov. 14 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, earned sixth place honors for his gutsy 12-round win over Joshua Clottey last June collecting 129 points.

Rounding up the Top 10 are Bernard Hopkins (seventh, 115); IBF light heavyweight champion Chad Dawson (eighth, 57); Arthur Abraham (ninth, 43) and current IBF and WBO heavyweight kingpin Wladimir Klitschko of Ukraine (10th, 33).

Nonito Donaire Jr., another Filipino boxer, was among the boxers who also received votes joining Indonesian featherweight Chris John at 16th with both fighters getting four votes each.

Other boxers who received votes are Ivan Calderon, Juan Manuel Lopez, Israel Vazquez, Rafael Marquez, Vitali Klitschko, Celestino Caballero, Timothy Bradley and Hozumi Hasegawa.

Back in Los Angeles

Pacquiao is now back in Los Angeles as he enters the final stages of his preparation for his Nov. 14 slugfest with Boricuan bomber Cotto.

Pacquiao received a warm welcome from his fans who hoped to get a glimpse of their boxing idol at the Los Angeles International Airport on Saturday (Sunday in Manila).

Paglabas ko pa lang sa airport, di ko akalain na ganun kadami ang sumalubong sa akin. Nabigla ako," said Pacquiao in an interview with GMANews.TV.

Boxing scribes also predicted a possible Pacquiao-Mayweather Jr. bout in 2010, a megabuck showdown that may be billed as the fight of the century.

If both parties agreed to fight next year, Pacquiao is expected to rake in an estimated $30 million or close to P1.5 billion in his fight purse. – GMANews.TV

Pacquiao, 90 percent ready - Coach

|

PHILIPPINE NEWS SERVICE -- AS Manny Pacquiao leaves for the U.S. tonight for the remaining two weeks of his training, trainer Freddie Roach declared the boxing champion to be 90 percent fit ready for his Nov. 14 title fight with Miguel Cotto.

Roach said he expects Pacquiao to complete the remaining 10 percent still lacking in his preparation once they hit the Wild Card gym in Los Angeles by Monday.

Pacquiao, Roach, conditioning coach Alex Ariza and the rest of the team will be flying back to the U.S. after spending more than a month training at the Shape Up gym in Baguio City and Gerry Penalosa’s gym in Mandaluyong.

“Manny is now 90 percent ready,” said Roach. “Now there is two weeks to 100 (percent) and will hit that next week in L.A.”

Roach gave Pacquiao a day-off in training Friday following what he said was a rigorous roadwork in the morning.

“He’s been very tired after undergoing roadwork (at the Luneta) for an hour this morning (yesterday),” said Roach, who decided to give the pound-for-pound king a well-deserved rest after the Filipino failed to answer several of his trainer’s call by mid-afternoon Friday.

“I thought I have to give him a day’s off. He had a good 10-round sparring yesterday (Thursday), another good road work today, and I thought I owe it to give him his first day off.”

While he’s not looking past the 28-year old Cotto, the reigning World Boxing Organization (WBO welterweight champion, Roach didn’t hide his desire to meet Juan Manuel Marquez again, and possibly, the returning Floyd Mayweather Jr.

He said should the two mega-fights happen, the 30-year old Pacquiao can finally hang up his gloves.

“It will be a dream come true if we can fight Mayweather and Marquez. If that happens, there is nothing more to prove for Manny, and we can all retire,” Roach said.

Of the two warriors however, a third meeting with Marquez is more of a possibility.

While he really wants a shot at Mayweather in what many boxing experts believe would be one of the biggest boxing fights of all time, the share in the purse hampers the bout from happening, since as Roach puts it, “Mayweather wants all the money.”

Pride more than the prize meanwhile, motivates the three-time Trainer of the Year from considering a third – and hopefully, last – meeting with the 35-year old Marquez.  Read the original posting here

“I want Marquez because he’s been crying a lot and I want to shut him up,” said Roach.

Pacquiao and Marquez fought to a controversial draw in their first encounter in 2004, before the Filipino ring icon eked out a close split decision in their 2008 rematch.

If ever, Roach said he wants to fight Marquez at 140 pounds, where he believes, the Mexican fighter is at his best.   Read the original posting here http://www.philippinestoday.net/index.php?module=article&view=2107

Highlights and Quotes from Pacquiao/Cotto 24/7, Episode 1

|

In the premiere episode of HBO’s Pacquiao/Cotto 24/7 series, fans were given an inside look at the ins and outs of each man’s life in training camp. The telecast kicked off by showing Pacquiao and Cotto together on September 10th at Yankees stadium as they officially announced the signing of the fight. The contrast in each man’s demeanor was striking as Pacquiao seemed to be smiling and enjoying himself while Cotto was all business, as usual.

Throughout the first episode we were invited into Pacquiao’s training camp in the Baguio City. The damage that was done by typhoon Ketsana was well documented and eye opening at times. The episode also focused a lot of trainer Freddie Roach’s mindset, from his uncertainty to being in the Philippines to his insistence that his relationship with his fighter is as good as ever. As the episode came to a close we saw Roach interacting with Pacquiao and insisting that he was going to be leaving the island to avoid the possibility of running into more trouble from more oncoming tropical storms.

We were first given a look into Cotto’s life as the he began training for the contest in his native Puerto Rico, 35 days before Pacquiao would begin his camp. The show highlighted Cotto’s relationship with family as well as expounding upon the estranged relationship that existed between Miguel and his uncle Evangelista, who is now out of the picture. The show later followed Team Cotto to as they made the move to Tampa, Florida as well. Renting out a mansion, the camaraderie in the team seems to be very tight and Miguel seems to be on point with everything.

While Cotto’s camp is full of a relaxed focus, Pacquiao seems to have much drama and turmoil going on. Still, both fighters appear to be working tirelessly for their encounter in the ring. With so much to cover in just a 30 minute segment, I have highlighted some of the finer quotes from the first Pacquiao/Cotto 24/7. This is what everybody was saying…
“It’s hard. I thought it would be indoor and heated but it’s not. It’s very cold” Pacquiao said as he swam inside of a pool located outdoors. The distractions in Baguio were deemed to great for Manny to do his roadwork and he instead had to focus on a different workout to get himself fit.
“I feel bad. My sympathy [goes out] to all those people who suffered from the storm.” – A reflective Pacquiao speaking honestly about storm Ketsana and its effects on his people. Pacquiao showed a very serious side of himself and you can tell he will be fighting to do his country justice on the 14th.
“My choice was Vancouver for the training camp but they at least don’t have typhoons. I’m wondering what where doing here a little bit.” – A befuddled Freddie Roach speaking early from camp as he was still trying to adapt to the surroundings of Baguio City.

“The characters are the same. All of the L.A. boys are here. It’s no different. He’s got the whole entourage out here.”Roach speaking on Pacquiao’s entourage, who all made their way to the Philippines to be with the fighter.

“I hate to say this about a world champion, but he wasn’t that good.” – An extremely blunt Roach said speaking of Ricky Hatton, who was knocked out in two rounds by Pacquiao last May. Before the fight Hatton was perceived as a serious threat to Pacquiao but his abilities as a fighter were very lacking come fight night.  Read the complete original article here http://www.examiner.com/x-22973-Miami-Boxing-Examiner~y2009m10d25-Highlights-and-Quotes-from-PacquiaoCotto-247-Episode-1#

Cotto won't play 'mind games' with Roach

|

MANILA -- Welterweight champ Miguel Cotto is steering away from coach Freddie Roach’s “psy-war” tactics as his November 14 fight date with Pacquiao draws near.

Cotto, who will defend his World Boxing Organization (WBO) title against Pacquiao at the MGM Grand Arena in Las Vegas, said he isn’t buying any of Roach’s statements that he’ll get knocked out in the first round of the fight.
“I have never seen a fighter win with the talking of his trainer,” Cotto said in a report by PhilStar.com.

“So, I want to tell Freddie Roach, Miguel Cotto and his team do not care. The important thing here is that I’m not going to see Freddie Roach’s face in the ring. I will be there with Manny Pacquiao,” he added.

Roach, who admitted “throwing off” some of Pacquiao’s opponents with his statements, said his prized ward is perfectly capable of knocking out the Puerto Rican champ in just one round.

“He can say anything, try anything to draw the attention and try to be the hero of the whole promotion. But on Nov. 14, we will see who talks in the end, the ones who did all the talking or the ones who stayed silent,” said Cotto.

Pacquiao holds ‘despedida’

Pacquiao, meanwhile, held a farewell party on Saturday before heading to the US for the remainder of his preparations against Cotto.

The despedida party was attended by his relatives, friends and several political personalities.
Among those present were Environment Secretary Lito Atienza, Deputy National Security adviser Luis “Chavit” Singson, election lawyer Romy Macalintal and former Manila representative Miles Roces.

Pacquiao also received an oil painting depicting him and Britain’s Ricky Hatton, whom he knocked out in two rounds last May.

The pound-for-pound king was expected to board a Philippine Airlines flight to Los Angeles 10 p.m. Saturday.

Ariza predicts Pacman KO win if

|

MANILA – “The People’s Champ” Manny Pacquiao will be working on his footwork and speed training in the coming weeks, according to his conditioning coach Alex Ariza.

“He’s just right on track,” Ariza told abs-cbnNEWS.com in an exclusive interview Tuesday. He said he just has to make sure that Pacquiao’s added weight will not slow him down.

Pacquiao said he is comfortable at his current weight of 149 lbs., ABS-CBN News reported. The Filipino boxing superstar will face WBO welterweight champion Miguel Cotto at a catch weight of 145 lbs. on Nov. 14 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Ariza, meantime, said of Pacquiao’s present condition: “I couldn’t be more pleased. He’s so good, so strong.”

Just like what coach Freddie Roach earlier told the media, Ariza said he is certain that Pacquiao will knockout his Puerto Rican opponent.

“For sure, if he lands a shot,” he said, explaining that Cotto “can’t stand the power” of the Pacquiao punch.

“When we show up on the day of that weigh-in, Manny will be bigger. And that night of the fight, he'll be stronger,” assured the conditioning coach.

Bigger and stronger
Ariza even stressed that the bigger opponent does not always prevail, as proven by Pacquiao in previous matches.

“They said that about David Diaz, that David Diaz was bigger and stronger. They said that about Oscar de la Hoya, that he was bigger and stronger. And we came in bigger and stronger. They said that about Ricky Hatton,” he noted.

Pacquiao defeated Diaz by technical knockout in Round 9 (June 28, 2008), de la Hoya by TKO in Round 8 (Dec. 6, 2008), and Hatton by KO in Round 2 last May 2.

“Just because some guy's fatter doesn't make him bigger and stronger,” remarked Ariza.
Pacquiao will continue training in Manila before he leaves for the United States Saturday night. He will resume training on Oct. 26 at Roach’s Wild Card Gym in Hollywood, Los Angeles, California.
The pound-for-pound king began training for his fight against Cotto last Sept. 21 in Baguio City. – With a report from

Pacquiao wants to surpass de la Hoya

|

MANILA – Manny Pacquiao’s bout against Puerto Rican Miguel Cotto surely means a lot to the Filipino boxing icon because a lot is at stake for him.

Aside from the possibility of winning the WBC diamond belt and Cotto’s WBO welterweight title, Pacquiao is faced with the prospect of being the only boxer in history to win seven titles in seven different weight divisions.
He said he wants to surpass the record set by himself and "Golden Boy" Oscar de la Hoya, whom he defeated in 2008 by technical knockout in Round 8.

“Sa ngayon, tanging kami lang ni Ginoong Oscar Dela Hoya ang may anim na championship sa anim na magkakaibang weight division at kung sakali, ako pa lang ang una at katangi-tangi sa lahat ng mga boksingero na makakagawa nito,” he wrote in his Oct. 18 “Kumbinasyon” column on PhilBoxing.com.
Pacquiao said clinching his seventh world championship is what drives him to train hard for his November 14 bout against Cotto.

“Okay na okay po ang aking kundisyon at handang-handa na ako sa susunod kong laban,” he stated.
The pound-for-pound king wrote in his column last week that he still has a lot of work to do, saying that he is 70 percent ready for his opponent.

Pacquiao mentioned that he will be sparring to up to 12 rounds in the coming days.
He also said that everything is okay with his team. “Masaya at masigla ang lahat at walang problema sa Team Pacquiao. Kahit na may kaunting hindi pagkakaunawaan ay naaayos din naman ito.”

Shaq to lead Pacman?
Meanwhile, coach Freddie Roach revealed that NBA superstar Shaquille O’Neal presented himself to lead Pacquiao to the ring at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.
“He sounded like he really wanted to do it,” Roach told Abac Cordero of The Philippine Star.
Roach, however, has yet to discuss the suggestion with Pacquiao.
The American trainer said the suggestion came up when he he was giving O’Neal boxing lessons in Los Angeles.

In his last fight against Ricky Hatton on May 2, Pacquiao was led to the ring by World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) superstar Filipino-American Dave Batista.
Another WWE superstar, The Undertaker, also led Pacquiao to the ring. “The Phenom” did that for Pacquiao’s fight against Hector Velazquez in 2005.

'Pacquiao can match Floyd Jr. with speed'

|

MANILA – A highly respected boxing analyst said he thinks Manny Pacquiao will pose a tougher challenge against Floyd Mayweather, Jr. should a “mega-fight” be arranged between the two boxers.

Teddy Atlas, a well-known boxing trainer and ESPN sports analyst, believes Pacquiao can match Mayweather with speed, at least better than Juan Manuel Marquez did during the “Number One vs Numero Uno” match.

“Pacquiao is able to bring things in a better way than Marquez was able to bring. Pacquiao is a lot faster than Marquez and will probably match Mayweather with speed,” Atlas told David Tyler of DogHouse boxing.com.

Mayweather defeated Marquez by a lopsided decision. The former pound-for-pound king used his quickness to outbox the "smaller" Mexican, who was hampered by the climb in weight.

Atlas also cited that Pacquiao is different compared to Marquez in terms of boxing styles.
“Pacquiao is busier than Marquez and does a lot more than just put his hands together. I just think that Pacquiao does more things than Marquez does as a smaller guy going up in weight,” said Atlas.
A Pacquiao-Mayweather showdown is considered by many boxing fans as a “fight for the ages” because it would mean pitting the best pound-for-pound boxers in recent years.

Pacquiao is currently the top pound-for-pound and one of the most exciting fighters boxer today. Mayweather, on the other hand, is now ranked No. 2 in the P4P list owing to his "destruction" of Marquez.

Atlas, however, said that the possibility of a Pacquiao-Mayweather match up will depend on the outcome of the Filipino’s “Firepower” showdown with Miguel Cotto.

The Filipino champ will try to win Cotto’s World Boxing Organization welterweight title when they face off at the MGM Grand Arena in Las Vegas on November 14.

“I think a lot will have to do with how he gets through the Cotto fight, if he gets through the Cotto well, then I think all systems will be going perfect and I think all systems must be working perfect for him to go into the biggest fight of his life against Mayweather,” said Atlas.

Pacquiao is currently training in the highlands of Baguio to prepare himself against Cotto.

speed kills
in whatever sport, and most certainly in war, defense is nothing if it cannot keep up with the enemy's speed. so mayweather's defense was successful because marquez' offense was slow, fighting at 2 weights above his rank. but pacquiao's speed hasn't diminished. if mayweather meets pacquiao, he will retire after the fight. just like barrera and hatton before him.

Destruction of Mayweather Jr.
“Pacquiao is able to bring things in a better way than Marquez was able to bring. 'Perfect' Pacquiao ready for Cotto, says trainer

|

MANILA - Boxing hero Manny Pacquiao has overcome disruptions from typhoons and landslides while training in the Philippines to be in ideal shape ahead of his big bout with Miguel Cotto, his trainer said.

"He is right where I want him to be, perfect," Freddie Roach told AFP on Thursday evening after the six-time world-champion completed a heavy workout that included 10 rounds of sparring in a Manila gym.
Pacquiao will head to the United States on the weekend after an intense five weeks of training in his home country, during which more than 1,000 people died in natural disasters.

Pacquiao was even forced to move camps from the cool mountain resort of Baguio to the sweaty capital of Manila after storms claimed hundreds of lives in and around the hill station, then a typhoon threatened more damage there.
But Roach insisted the disasters had not impacted his 30-year-old protege, who stunned the world with victories over American great Oscar de la Hoya last year and Britain's Ricky Hatton in May.
"We didn't let it affect our training. We worked right through it and never missed a day," Roach said of the storms.
"So it was a great training camp in Baguio."

Pacquiao is a deeply religious man and a hero to virtually everyone in the Southeast Asian nation. But Roach said Pacquiao had remained completely committed to his training despite the disasters going on around him.
"One hundred percent. No problem at all. It's been a really good training camp. He's been focused from day one, throughout," he said.

Pacquiao will travel to Los Angeles for two weeks of training ahead of his November 14 fight against Cotto, the 27-year-old Puerto Rican who is looking to snatch the Filipino's status as best pound-for-pound fighter in the world.
Cotto, the WBO welterweight champion, is a huge underdog for the 145-pound bout at the MGM Grand hotel and casino in Las Vegas.

But his trainer, Joe Santiago, said this week he was confident of an upset.
"When that night comes and he wins, everyone will know that Puerto Rico does have the best pound-for-pound fighter in the world," Santiago said from Cotto's training camp at the Fight Factory Gym in Tampa, Florida.

"Cotto is the first true welterweight that (Pacquiao) will have fought in his career. He is young and still in his prime so that is what Pacquiao is facing."   Read the original article here
