Pacquiao wants to surpass de la Hoya

MANILA – Manny Pacquiao’s bout against Puerto Rican Miguel Cotto surely means a lot to the Filipino boxing icon because a lot is at stake for him.

Aside from the possibility of winning the WBC diamond belt and Cotto’s WBO welterweight title, Pacquiao is faced with the prospect of being the only boxer in history to win seven titles in seven different weight divisions.
-
He said he wants to surpass the record set by himself and “Golden Boy” Oscar de la Hoya, whom he defeated in 2008 by technical knockout in Round 8.

“Sa ngayon, tanging kami lang ni Ginoong Oscar Dela Hoya ang may anim na championship sa anim na magkakaibang weight division at kung sakali, ako pa lang ang una at katangi-tangi sa lahat ng mga boksingero na makakagawa nito,” he wrote in his Oct. 18 “Kumbinasyon” column on PhilBoxing.com.
-
-Pacquiao said clinching his seventh world championship is what drives him to train hard for his November 14 bout against Cotto.

“Okay na okay po ang aking kundisyon at handang-handa na ako sa susunod kong laban,” he stated.
-
The pound-for-pound king wrote in his column last week that he still has a lot of work to do, saying that he is 70 percent ready for his opponent.
-
Pacquiao mentioned that he will be sparring to up to 12 rounds in the coming days.
He also said that everything is okay with his team. “Masaya at masigla ang lahat at walang problema sa Team Pacquiao. Kahit na may kaunting hindi pagkakaunawaan ay naaayos din naman ito.”
Shaq to lead Pacman?
Meanwhile, coach Freddie Roach revealed that NBA superstar Shaquille O’Neal presented himself to lead Pacquiao to the ring at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.
“He sounded like he really wanted to do it,” Roach told Abac Cordero of The Philippine Star.
-
Roach, however, has yet to discuss the suggestion with Pacquiao.
The American trainer said the suggestion came up when he he was giving O’Neal boxing lessons in Los Angeles.
In his last fight against Ricky Hatton on May 2, Pacquiao was led to the ring by World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) superstar Filipino-American Dave Batista.
-
Another WWE superstar, The Undertaker, also led Pacquiao to the ring. “The Phenom” did that for Pacquiao’s fight against Hector Velazquez in 2005.
